How to Spot a Forged Certificate of Analysis
A certificate of analysis is only as trustworthy as the lab and the chain of custody behind it. Because a COA is just a document, anyone with a PDF editor can change a purity number or swap a logo. Knowing what a genuine report contains makes the forgeries easier to catch.
Check the source, not just the seal
Start with who issued the document. A real analytical report names the testing facility, lists a contact address, and references specific instrumentation. Generic COAs with no lab name, no analyst signature, and no date are the first warning. A logo proves nothing on its own, since logos are trivial to copy. What matters is whether the report ties back to an identifiable entity you can verify independently.
Watch for mismatched fonts, crooked alignment, and numbers that sit slightly off the baseline of surrounding text. These are classic signs that a field was edited after the fact. A purity value of 99.9 percent pasted over an original 96 percent often leaves subtle spacing artifacts.
Cross-reference the data against the molecule
A forged report frequently fails on internal consistency. The stated molecular weight should match the molecular formula. The retention time on a chromatogram should be plausible for the compound described. If the document claims a mass spectrometry result, the reported mass should agree with the theoretical value for that structure. When these numbers contradict each other, the report was likely assembled from unrelated parts. Look closely at the chromatogram itself. A real HPLC trace shows a baseline, a main peak, and usually small neighboring peaks. A suspiciously clean image with a single perfect spike and no axis labels is often a stock graphic rather than instrument output. Every legitimate report references a specific lot or batch. That identifier should appear consistently across the COA and any accompanying paperwork. If you receive material with a lot number that does not appear on the document, or a document with a lot that does not appear on the vial, the link between paper and product is broken. When in doubt, the strongest check is independent confirmation. A document supplied by a seller and a result generated by an unaffiliated laboratory are two different things, and only the second removes the conflict of interest entirely.
Two common questions
Does a watermark or QR code make a report genuine? Not by itself. A scannable code is only as good as the destination it points to. If the link leads to a page controlled by the same seller, it adds presentation rather than independence. Follow the code and see whether it resolves to a verifiable, unaffiliated source.
Can a real lab still produce a misleading report? Yes, if the document describes a different lot than the one you received, or if the method was inappropriate for the compound. This is why lot matching and method disclosure matter as much as the lab's name. A pristine-looking report tied to the wrong batch is functionally a forgery, even if no field was edited.
